Influence.

Influence is very important in an artist and their work! According to the wonderful website of Wikipedia, McQueen has cited that he is influence by the Nouvelle Vague (new wave of French filmmakers from 1958-1964) and films by Andy Warhol.

Short Video by Andy Warhol
(This video DOES NOT show any nudity)
This video titled, "Blow Job" is a 35-minute silent film that was shot using black and white film.

This is a video that McQueen probably took inspiration from!

Why?

Because...

   ...it is discomforting!

McQueen is very interested in showing the raw and "real" world that so many people are afraid of...
...and I just know that when McQueen saw this film he said, "Wow"

McQueen was told this by interviewer, Casey Burchby:
"You're bringing genuine discomfort back to the cinema. In the best sense possible, of course."

...and Steve McQueen responded with:

"Thanks -- that's my job."

Like Andy Warhol...
...McQueen is bringing discomfort to his audience.
